Vernaccia is an ancient and noble vine that has been cultivated in Sardinia since the time of the Phoenicians, who introduced it to the Sinis peninsula (in the coastal area of Oristano), where they founded the ancient landing place of Tharros.
This superb wine, the flagship of Sardinian winemaking, owes its particular characteristics to an oxidative ageing process that sees the wine mature for at least 3 or 4 years in small oak or chestnut barrels. This special ageing process is often carried out even today in traditional straw-and-mud cellars in Oristano, complete with their distinctive half-round-tile roofs sitting on cane structures. Vernaccia, a dry wine with a singular personality, displays warm, amber undertones and offers up a complex and ethereal fragrance of dried fruit, almond blossom and strawberry-tree honey sensations that are amplified on the palate, which demonstrates extraordinary persistence.
